Friday night, Kim, Hannah and I are heading down the road to see Prince Caspian. We’re driving past a more rural part of town and we come up behind a black Mitsubishi Galant. So, as we’re going down the road, I see some brown hair out the right side of the window…like someone is sticking part of their hair out. No big deal….keep talking to Kim. A little later I notice that it looks like an animal in the back and I’m assuming it is one of those big dogs with the really long, flowing hair. A few seconds later, the animal sticks its head out a little more. I looked over at Kim and said, “I might be crazy, but I think there is a horse in the back of that car.” We’re trying to look and we’re both thinking there is no way. Well, the car turns off so that the window turns toward our car and sure enough, it was a horse. It stuck its head way out so that there was no mistaking it. These people were riding down the road with a miniature horse in the back of a four door sedan. I’m not kidding. That’s got sermon illustration written all over it.

Hannah asks, “Daddy, why would they do that?” My response, without skipping a beat: “Baby, because they’re redneck.” LOL oohhhh man. Only in South Carolina :)

I wanted to say personally how thankful I am to those who serve in the military, to those veterans who have served and ultimately those who gave their very lives in service to this country. No matter what anyone tells you, this is STILL the greatest nation in the world, and I count it a huge blessing to live here. Thanks to all that served.

The summer of blockbuster continues. Up next is the Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Kim and I took Hannah to see this movie last night. Can I just say that Movies are crazy expensive. Anyway, we really enjoyed it. I thought that the acting was very good in this flick. The four main characters (Peter, Susan, Edmond & Lucy) were the same as the first movie and I thought they have matured as actors, not to mention the obvious growing up part. There are tons of good truths communicated in this movie, too. The action/battle scenes were done well while not showing a lot of blood and gore. The special effects for the movie were done by the same folks that did Lord of the Rings (WETA workshop) so you know they are excellent. Overall, I would definitely give this movie an A, and we decided we will definitely buy this one when it comes out on DVD. There are no extra scenes after the credits so don’t stick around unless you really want to. Also, I would recommend seeing the first film in the Narnia series before going and seeing this one. Otherwise you may be lost. It’s a good rent, too.

Kim and I took in Iron Man last Friday night. It was a great way to kick off the summer blockbuster season. As mentioned before, I love going to movies and this summer looks like it has some good ones coming up.

Iron Man did a really good job of setting up the background of the story, the reason for the existence of the super hero. Let me just say that while men and women will enjoy this flick, it is definitely a man’s movie. It had just the right amount of humor, action, techno geek stuff and general coolness. The only part of the film that I wished we could have seen more of would be the final fight scene. It was cut kinda short and could have used just a bit more action. Overall, the billing didn’t disappoint. A- Up next, Narnia….or Indiana Jones :)

One big hint: Stay through the credits. There’s a scene at the end that sets up the next movie and will please most avid comic book readers. That’s all I’m saying.

Actually, that’s not entirely accurate. I do play golf. It’s just that I’m averaging about once every 2.5 years. I consider my “handicap” when I play each time the very fact that I’m on the course. :) It’s just not pretty.

Yesterday my parents call and my mom wants to take Kim and the kids to the zoo in Columbia while my dad and I go play some golf. Sounds like a fun day so they all take off, and my dad and I head off to our high class, high dollar golf course: Jim and Lily’s in Jackson, SC. It’s a redneck golfers paradise. You can play and ride 18 for about $15.00. The fairways are a lovely mixture of dirt, sand, weeds and the occasional plug of grass. We decided that we would be good for 9 holes so that’s what we played.

My dad has macular degeneration so his eyesight is not the best. So, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Well, we played 9 holes, and my dad did really good. I would have to help him spot where his ball went, but he drove the ball well and putted well. In the end, his score was 58. I did beat him…..by only 7 strokes. Like I said, I probably shouldn’t golf. But, we had a great time, the weather was perfect…it was a good day :)

My little girl Hannah turns 10 years old today….and I feel old :)

Seriously, I remember the day that she was born very clearly. I remember walking down the hallways of St. Joseph’s Hospital feeling like I was floating - it was just magical. There is nothing like holding that precious gift in your hands and the reality hits you that God has entrusted her to Kim and I. WOW!

When Kim was pregnant with her, we had all of these people saying “oh your life is going to change….” to the point that if we heard it just one more time, we might have gone Old Testament on em. However, there was one old man that walked up to Kim one day and obviously, she was showing big time. He said something that I remember to this day: “Oh, honey you don’t know what love is until you have a baby.”….There is a lot of truth in that. As I was holding this incredible gift 10 years ago, experiencing the amount of love at that moment, the thought nailed me “This is what the Father gave for me? Now that is love.”

Happy Birthday Hannah-Bear!

Today is Autism Awareness Day. It is the very first one. I am so thrilled about the increasing awareness of autism in our country. Spencer, our 6 year old, is on the autism spectrum. He is on the high functioning side of autism which we are so thankful for. So many families have children, even multiple children that are autistic. Some cases are very severe as well. If you study the increase of reported cases by the CDC since the late 80’s…even 90’s is staggering. Here are some links if you’re not sure what autism is or would just like more info.

This morning I was reading in Malachi, chapter 1. The Lord was addressing Israel and confronting them because they were showing contempt toward the Lord (vv 6-14). They were doing this by offering defiled sacrifices to God. Instead of offering God their first fruit, their best offerings, they were giving God the left overs, the crippled, blind and diseased animals:

7 You have shown contempt by offering defiled sacrifices on my altar. Then you ask, ‘How have we defiled the sacrifices?’ “You defile them by saying the altar of the Lord deserves no respect. 8 When you give blind animals as sacrifices, isn’t that wrong? And isn’t it wrong to offer animals that are crippled and diseased? Try giving gifts like that to your governor, and see how pleased he is!” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. Malachi 1:7-8

They were giving God easy sacrifices…easy offerings….and they stunk in God’s sight. He even says, “Look, try giving to the local governor what you’re bringing to me and see how he likes it!” That’s when I began to ask myself, “Do my offerings stink to God?”

How often have I given Him the leftovers, the second best when the God of Heaven, my Jesus, deserves my very best. My prayer today is that I would give God my best offering…in how I love Him, in how I love my family, the people I work and serve with, in how I do my job.

It’s monday and I’m staring at the piles of stuff in my office that I’ve got to knock out this week. Got A LOT to get done over the next few weeks leading up to Easter. I’m slowly starting to feel normal again, but it is a slow process. I’m on my last day of antibiotics. Anitibiotics are a good thing most of the time, but I can’t always tell if it is the illness or the medicine that makes me feel so weird. I appreciate those of you that have been praying for me. This whole flu and flu relapse situation that I’ve been going through has been really strange and difficult. As I’ve been going through it, I keep wondering and asking, “Lord, what are you trying to show me through this?” I know He is at work doing something that I can’t see, and it could very well be that it is just teaching me to trust Him more, among other things. No matter what, He Is Lord.

On a side note, I’d like to go on record in saying that Daylight Savings Time is a tool of the devil. Every year for the two weeks following the “Spring Forward” my family and I are struggling. The weird thing is we get plenty of sleep. It’s just that our bodies are still on the old time I guess. Anyway, if anyone wants to begin a petition for non-observance of DST in the state of SC, sign me up. I’m all for it :)
